A browser game with text-to-speech and screen reader support
Welcome to Bari Bari Mental Math.
[The idea]
Numbers appear on the screen one at a time, large, and are spoken as they appear. Add them up in your head. When the last one has gone by, five possible totals are offered and you choose the right one. Ten correct in a row clears the level.
[Levels]
There are 108 levels. Four things change as you climb:
- How many numbers: 5, then 10, then 15.
- The signs: additions only at first; later some numbers are subtracted. These are spoken as "minus 7" and shown as "−7".
- The speed: slow, normal, fast.
- The digits: one digit at first, then two, and on up to six.
Levels 1 to 6 are one digit at the slow speed, 7 to 12 one digit at normal, 13 to 18 one digit fast. Levels 19 to 36 run through the same sequence with two digits, and so on.
[When you get one wrong]
You can walk back through the numbers one at a time, each with the running total, so you can find where the addition slipped. Then you can try the same level again. The highest level you have reached is remembered, so next time "Continue" starts you in the same place.
[Opening the menu mid-question]
If you open the menu while numbers are appearing, that question stops, and it is shown again from the first number once you close the menu. Nothing is ever missed because of a menu.
[Online duel]
Both players get exactly the same problem. If both answer correctly you move on to the next level together; the first mistake decides the match. While you wait, the game tells you that your opponent is still answering.
[Controls]
Use the arrow keys to move through the items and Enter to choose. Escape, or pressing Enter twice, opens the menu. You can also swipe across the screen. Turning on "Selection support" in the settings lets you play entirely from the bar at the bottom of the screen. The settings also change the speech rate and the text size. If the numbers are hard to catch, lower the speech rate or drop down to the next slower speed.
